If the Tracking Is Wrong, the Optimisation Starts With the Wrong Story

A campaign can look profitable because the dashboard says 100 conversions.

But what were those conversions?

  • A phone-number click?
  • A WhatsApp button?
  • A form open?
  • A successful form submission?
  • A qualified lead?
  • A customer?

I’m Muhammad Ali Abbasi. I build conversion tracking systems that help businesses understand what people actually did after the click, and which actions should influence the next marketing decision.

The goal is not to collect more events.
The goal is to separate useful signals from noise.

Based in Dubai. Working across the UAE and international markets.

Already have GA4, GTM or Google Ads tracking? I can start with the setup you already have.

AAMC: live GTM tag setup, with separate phone, WhatsApp and form actions.
Spectronix: successful lead form. GA4 Lead Form Success and Google Ads Qualified Lead Form fire.
Looker Studio: leads and traffic dashboard, selected reporting dataset.

THE PROBLEM

Google Ads says one thing. GA4 says another. The sales team says something else.

This happens more often than businesses expect.

Google Ads may report a conversion.

GA4 may record a different number.

Meta may show leads.

The CRM may contain fewer.

The website may be tracking every click as if it were a completed enquiry.

And the person making budget decisions is left trying to decide which number to trust.

ONE BUSINESS EVENT
  • Sometimes the platforms are using different attribution models.
  • Sometimes the event definitions are different.
  • Sometimes the same action is being counted more than once.
  • Sometimes a tag fires before the lead is actually completed.
  • Sometimes the wrong action is being used as a primary conversion.

Before asking a platform to optimise harder, I want to know what we taught it to call success.

That is where conversion tracking starts.

EVENT QUALITY

A click, a form submission and a qualified lead should not automatically mean the same thing.

Imagine somebody presses the WhatsApp button.

That tells us there was intent.

But we do not yet know whether they sent a message.

Now imagine somebody submits a lead form successfully.

That is a stronger action.

Then the sales team speaks to them and confirms they are relevant.

That is stronger again.

Then they book.

Then they buy.

Each stage tells us something different.

Not every business needs all seven stages on day one.

But the more accurately we define each stage, the more useful the reporting becomes.

  1. 01BUTTON CLICK
  2. 02MESSAGE / FORM START
  3. 03SUCCESSFUL LEAD
  4. 04CONTACTABLE LEAD
  5. 05QUALIFIED LEAD
  6. 06BOOKING / OPPORTUNITY
  7. 07CUSTOMER

The problem is not having too little data.

The problem is treating different actions as if they were the same result.

THE MEASUREMENT LAYER

Track the actions that help the business understand what happened next.

The exact setup depends on the customer journey.

Possible events include:

FORM SUBMISSIONS

  • Successful contact forms
  • Consultation requests
  • Quote requests
  • Booking forms
  • Lead forms

WHATSAPP

  • WhatsApp button clicks
  • WhatsApp lead actions
  • WhatsApp success events where the journey allows it

PHONE

  • Phone-number clicks
  • Call actions
  • Call tracking integrations where available

EMAIL

  • Email clicks
  • Lead-enquiry actions

ECOMMERCE

  • Add to cart
  • Checkout
  • Purchase
  • Revenue

OTHER BUSINESS EVENTS

  • Appointment booking
  • Qualified lead
  • Opportunity
  • Offline sale
  • CRM stage

I do not recommend tracking every interaction as a primary conversion.

Some events are useful for analysis.

A smaller number should usually represent the actions the platform is actually asked to optimise toward.

GTM

Google Tag Manager gives the tracking system one place to stay organised.

Google Tag Manager can act as the measurement layer between the website and the platforms using its data.

Instead of scattering tracking code across the website, GTM can help organise:

  • Google Analytics.
  • Google Ads.
  • Meta events.
  • Conversion Linker.
  • Custom events.
  • User-provided data.
  • Click events.
  • Form-success events.
  • Data Layer variables.
  • Other measurement tools.

But GTM is only useful when the trigger logic is clean.

A tag firing is not proof that the tracking is correct.

The right tag needs to fire:

on the right action,

at the right time,

with the right data,

and only when it should.

AAMC: live GTM tag setup, with separate phone, WhatsApp and form actions.
AAMC: variables carrying page, click, form and service context.

“Tag fired” is not the finish line.

“Correct tag fired on the correct event” is what matters.

REAL IMPLEMENTATION • HEALTHCARE

One website. Different actions. Different signals.

This tracking setup was built to separate different lead actions rather than sending everything into the same generic conversion bucket.

AAMC: live GTM tag setup, with separate phone, WhatsApp and form actions.
AAMC: variables carrying page, click, form and service context.
AAMC: Tag Assistant, expected tags firing.

Tags

  • Conversion Linker
  • GA4 Google Tag
  • GA4 Generate Lead
  • GA4 Phone Click
  • GA4 WhatsApp Click
  • Google Ads Form Submission
  • Google Ads User-Provided Data
  • Meta Form Submit
  • Microsoft Clarity

Variables

  • Analytics Client ID
  • Analytics Session ID
  • Click Classes
  • Click ID
  • Click Text
  • Click URL
  • Page Hostname
  • Page Path
  • Page URL
  • Referrer
  • Form Name
  • Service

The important part is not the number of tags.

The important part is what they represent.

A phone interaction can be analysed separately from a WhatsApp action.

A successful form submission can fire a stronger conversion event.

User-provided data can support Google Ads measurement where the setup, consent and platform requirements are appropriate.

Google currently supports enhanced conversion measurement through Google Tag Manager and first-party user-provided data. Google Help

One website visitor can create several interactions.

The tracking should understand which one actually represents the result we care about.

GOOGLE ANALYTICS 4

GA4 should help explain the journey, not just count visits.

GA4 can answer questions that advertising platforms cannot answer alone.

  • Where did the visitor come from?
  • Which page did they enter through?
  • What did they do before becoming a lead?
  • Did they visit on mobile or desktop?
  • Did organic traffic behave differently from paid traffic?
  • Did AI-assistant traffic generate enquiries?
  • Which landing pages produced actions?
  • Which channels produced engaged visitors?

The useful part is not opening GA4 and looking at “users.”

It is building events and reporting around questions the business actually needs answered.

That is how analytics becomes a decision tool rather than a reporting screen.

Examples

  • Traffic source.
  • Landing page.
  • Device.
  • Lead action.
  • Form.
  • Service.
  • Channel.
  • Conversion path.
  • Lead source.

GOOGLE ADS

Google Ads can only optimise toward the conversion you tell it matters.

If Google is being asked to optimise for the wrong event, automated bidding can get very efficient at finding more of the wrong thing.

That is why I review:

  • Which conversion actions exist.
  • Which are primary.
  • Which are secondary.
  • Which campaigns use them.
  • When each tag fires.
  • Whether the same conversion is duplicated.
  • Whether GA4 imports and native Google Ads tags are overlapping.
  • Whether form-success tracking is actually based on successful submission.
  • Whether deeper lead outcomes can eventually be connected.

For lead-generation businesses, the measurement can mature over time.

  1. 01Successful lead submission.
  2. 02Contactable or qualified lead.
  3. 03Opportunity or sale.

Google’s current enhanced-conversion setup supports first-party/user-provided data and can be used with Google Tag Manager to improve conversion measurement. Google Help

The closer the conversion gets to the business outcome, the more useful the optimisation can become.

META

Meta also needs a clear definition of what happened after the ad.

A Meta campaign may generate:

  • Instant Form leads.
  • Website forms.
  • WhatsApp conversations.
  • Website actions.
  • Purchases.
  • Bookings.

The tracking needs to reflect the actual conversion path.

If somebody simply clicks a button, that is different from completing a lead.

If a form submission succeeds, the event should reflect that stronger action.

If the business has downstream lead-quality information, that becomes another layer of measurement.

I treat Meta tracking the same way I treat Google Ads tracking.

Start with the business event.

Then decide how the platform should receive it.

REAL IMPLEMENTATION • B2B LEAD GENERATION

Different lead actions should fire different tags.

This setup shows the difference between simply tracking activity and tracking specific outcomes.

Spectronix: successful lead form. GA4 Lead Form Success and Google Ads Qualified Lead Form fire.

When the successful lead-form event fires:

GA4 Lead Form Success fires.

Google Ads Qualified Lead Form fires.

Other unrelated interaction tags remain inactive.

Spectronix: WhatsApp lead event. The form conversion does not fire.

When the WhatsApp lead-success event fires:

GA4 WhatsApp Lead Submit fires.

The form conversion does not fire.

That separation matters.

If every click fires every conversion tag, the numbers become useless.

The goal is a clean measurement layer where each business action has a clear meaning.

LEAD-GENERATION BUSINESSES

Your customers do not all convert through the same button.

For many service businesses, especially in the UAE and GCC, the lead journey can involve:

  • WhatsApp.
  • Phone.
  • Website form.
  • Booking page.
  • Live chat.

A tracking setup should reflect that reality.

But it should also separate:

Clicking WhatsApp

from

submitting a form

from

creating a qualified enquiry.

Otherwise the dashboard can report a large number of “leads” while the business sees something very different.

BETTER SIGNALS

Sometimes the website conversion is only the beginning of the customer journey.

A lead-generation business may close the sale hours, days or weeks later.

That creates a measurement gap.

The advertising platform sees:

  • Form submitted.

The business sees:

  • Lead contacted.
  • Lead qualified.
  • Proposal sent.
  • Customer acquired.

Enhanced conversion and offline lead measurement can help connect those later outcomes back to the earlier marketing interaction when the setup and first-party data allow it.

Google currently recommends enhanced conversions for leads as the upgraded path for using lead and offline conversion data, including through Google Ads Data Manager and supported tagging setups. Google Help

A form submission tells us someone responded.

A qualified-lead signal tells us whether the business wanted that response.

VERIFY BEFORE YOU TRUST IT

I do not consider tracking complete until I test what actually fires.

A setup can look correct inside GTM and still behave incorrectly on the live website.

That is why implementation needs testing.

I check:

  • Does the event appear?
  • Does the correct tag fire?
  • Does it fire once?
  • Does it fire only after success?
  • Does the wrong tag stay inactive?
  • Does GA4 receive it?
  • Does Google Ads receive it?
  • Does Meta receive the right event?
  • Are parameters populated correctly?
  • Does the event show up in the expected platform?
Verified event firing in Tag Assistant.

Testing is where configuration becomes evidence.

FROM EVENTS TO DECISIONS

Tracking becomes more useful when the business can actually read it.

Raw event data is only one layer.

The next job is turning it into reporting that answers real questions.

I use reporting to connect areas such as:

  • Website traffic.
  • Lead volume.
  • Lead source.
  • Paid search.
  • Organic search.
  • AI Assistant traffic.
  • Landing-page performance.
  • Campaign performance.
  • Search terms.
  • Device.
  • Location.
  • Conversion rate.
  • Cost per conversion.

For example, one of the supplied Looker Studio dashboards recorded:

Website sessions
3,004
Unique leads
137
Lead activities
307
Looker Studio: leads and traffic dashboard, selected reporting dataset.
Lead actions separated by channel and source, including AI Assistant traffic.

It also separated lead sources across Display, Organic Search, Paid Search, Direct, AI Assistant and Referral.

Another dashboard connected Google Ads spend, clicks, conversions, search terms and landing-page performance.

The point is not to make the dashboard colourful.

The point is to make it useful.

COMMON PROBLEMS

You probably do not need “more tracking.” You need the current tracking to make sense.

  • Google Ads shows too many conversions.
  • GA4 and Google Ads do not match.
  • Meta reports leads the business cannot find.
  • Every button is counted as a conversion.
  • Forms are not tracking properly.
  • WhatsApp clicks are mixed with completed leads.
  • Duplicate conversions are appearing.
  • The business has GA4 but nobody trusts the reports.
  • Campaigns are optimising toward weak actions.
  • The sales team knows lead quality, but the advertising platform does not.
  • There is no clear dashboard.
  • The website was redesigned and tracking stopped working.

If one of those sounds familiar, I would start with the existing setup before adding more tools.

HOW I WORK

First understand the conversion. Then build the tracking around it.

  1. 01

    Define the Business Outcome

    What actually matters?

    Lead?

    Booking?

    Sale?

    Qualified enquiry?

  2. 02

    Map the Journey

    Where can somebody convert?

    Form?

    WhatsApp?

    Phone?

    Checkout?

  3. 03

    Audit the Existing Setup

    What is already installed?

    What currently fires?

    What is duplicated?

    What is missing?

  4. 04

    Design the Event Structure

    Primary events.

    Secondary events.

    Naming.

    Variables.

    Conversion logic.

  5. 05

    Implement

    GTM.

    GA4.

    Google Ads.

    Meta.

    Other required platforms.

  6. 06

    Test

    Tag Assistant.

    GA4 DebugView.

    Platform diagnostics.

    Live submission testing.

  7. 07

    Report

Build a reporting layer that connects events to channels and campaigns.

  8. 08

    Improve the Signal

Where possible, move from basic conversions toward stronger lead-quality or customer outcomes.

Tracking should become clearer over time.

Not more complicated.

COMMON TRACKING QUESTIONS

The questions businesses usually ask before fixing the measurement.

START WITH THE EVENT

Tell me what your dashboard calls a conversion.

Maybe the numbers do not match.

Maybe every click is being counted as a lead.

Maybe Google Ads says the campaigns are working and the sales team disagrees.

Maybe nobody knows whether the WhatsApp leads came from Google, Meta or organic search.

Maybe the tracking stopped after a website change.

Send me the setup you have now.

We can start by finding out what the numbers actually mean.

Start with the conversion you do not trust.
